Android Gains market share over competitors.

Apple has a trend of releasing a new version of the iPhone every summer and at this point there market share is expected to shoot up.  Despite claims the phone is selling “really well” they have in fact not been selling well enough. They have been beat by the Google phone market, Android.

With the comScore in the smartphone sector the android gained 5% market share for the Google phone market while all the other platforms declined. Apple lost 1.3%, RIM 1.8% and Microsoft 2.2%. Microsoft are currently in a pre Windows phone 7 limbo, which is obviously effecting there sales at the moment. I suspect windows mobile professionals and windows mobile users in general will be leaping at the business mobile with a full host of windows mobile applications for them to get their hands on.

RIM has been steadily losing their market share after dominating the business mobiles sector for so long. They are still in command but as other work phones gain popularity there share is in decline. With this in mind it's no surprise that android have filled the gap with a solid platform.

It's important to look at this in perspective though. The smartphone market is continually growing and for the period in question it grew 11%. This means that both Apple and Android were on the rise but with Android growing faster.

Nokia has released the launch date for its new Symbian smart phone the Nokia N8. The Nokia online show will be selling the phone during the last week of september and appear in the UK's physical stores by October 1st.

The Nokia N8 includes a 3.5 inch, 649x399 pixel capacitive touchscreen. The mobile has a reasonable 16 GB of storage memory and also boasts a massive 12 mega pixel camera with flash and Full HD. The camera is very impressive making it just as good as most digital cameras in the mid range market.

The 680 MHz ARM 11 CPU and 256 MB of SDRAM memory are lagging behind some of the latest smart phones on paper. The Samsung galaxy S for example runs at 1Ghz but also has a GPU supporting it. We shouldn't forget there biggest selling point is the camera which is simple amazing. Nokia recently hired actors Pamela Anderson and Ed Westwick to film with two lucky fans a short movie that was recorded fully on the Nokia N8.

The device will be priced at £429 or with contracts starting at £35 per month.

The map could be very handy, just image when you step out of a meeting late at night and you haven't really got a clue of your location. The app will automatically detect where you are. In the event of poor signal you can manually enter a street name etc. The app will also find reviews of the firms and then allow you to call them directly.

As for the younger crowd, this app could pay of dividends when on drunken nights out in new locations.

ServerUp - Android

ServerUp

This is the app for the IT manager. The app allows you to quickly and easily check the status of your network and web servers. If your server unfortunately goes down you will find out before the panicked phone calls start rolling in. The app runs on £G, wi-fi and ping, trace route, whoIs are all supported. SysAdmins rejoice.

Do Not Disturb - Blackberry

The do not disturb Blackberry app allows you to automatically filter phone calls. For example if you’re in the office and you don't want unknown numbers calling you, they can be filtered out and blocked.

Perhaps you finished work and don't want unknown numbers from ringing from 7pm to 7am, consider them gone. All done without turning your phone off or silencing your phone.

iTalk Recorder's recording screen

Great handy tool. This app basically converts your phone into an audio recorder. Handy if you want to keep minutes from a meeting or recall important parts.

iTalk's recording list

The interface is superbly simple, you just name the file and select the quality, obviously the better the quality the bigger the file size. The app also allows you to pause and resume recordings.

Scan2PDF - Windows

This app lets you take advantage of your phones camera. Basically it allows you to take a picture of a document convert it to PDF and then email it forward. If you don’t need perfect quality it makes things easy doing away with the need for a Fax.

Matt Stringer, MD of Carphone Warehouse, said: ‘Some customers have reported that they can be put off switching network operator because they are worried about bad reception in their home or office. With the Coverage Guarantee we’re leading the way in giving consumers the confidence to choose the network deal best for them, secure in the knowledge they can change if necessary.’
